Adrian Britchford continues the fabrication of the hand rail for the Tiger carriage.
1010060
Chris Britchford grouts the tiles in the gents toilet at Maespoeth.
1010067
At "The Triangle" Dave Price and Dave Quinton attend to fishplates just South of the crossing with a working party just North replacing sleepers.
1010069
Dave & Dave set to removing the bolts from fishplates to re-grease.
1010070
Trefor Davies, Alan Simcox, Shelley Rider and Stan Stockton all share the work replacing sleepers.
220031
Alan Simcox has a training session on the Smalley excavator.
220032
Mike Oxford has a training session on the JCB kindly loaned by Richard Evans for the purpose.
220035
Even David Gibson takes a turn on the Smalley - and was like a duck to water.
220038
David Gibson and Dave Quinton (too many Daves!) turn to commissioning the new lathe in the Maespoeth Workshop,
220045
Trefor Davies Alan Simcox  and Mike Trowman also paid attention to the ballast at Maespoeth Gate with Kango hammers..
220046
It was a crisp and misty weekend and mid-afternoon the valley started to disappear.
220049
Late in the afternoon you could hardly see the platform from the Signal Box.

Yes. Even The Corris suffers with leaves on the track. Notice that probably due to the good weather that we have had, a sharp frost has caused the loss of "green" leaves rather than dead ones. No wind has meant that they lie on the trackbed for now anyway.
250103
Adrian Britchford had work planned on one of the waggons. Unfortunately it was almost the Southernmost vehicle on the headshunt.
250104
Richard Greenhough moved several items of rolling stock to reach the one that Adrian needed ....
250106
.. and stored them temporarily in the North Loop Siding.
250110
Other work this weekend included clearing ballast from long sleepers within the yard area so that they could be cut in two with a chainsaw - thereby giving us a few extra sleepers.
250114
Steve Wheeler (not pictured) was also at Maespoeth working on No. 8. Andrew Rawlins can be seen here assisting in the work.
250123
A team also worked to clear the excess machines from the workshop area to enable the more recent additions to be commissioned. A manrider was quickly adapted by Adrian Britchford to assist in the movement of the machines.
250125
The manrider was quickly "numbered" as 220 ...
250126
... and immediately brought into use.
250199
This was also the final weekend of scheduled passenger services. Alex Hume waves one of the return trains off from Maespoeth.
260129
Adrian also needed to work on this tipper waggon so it was emptied of it's tar planings.
260136
Jill and Mike Oxford spread the planings to extend the pedestrian walkway further Southward.
260142
David Coleman took time out to compact the recently laid planings alongside the new fence with the "whacker".
260145
No. 8 almost made it's first trip out on the Corris metals. It had a view of "the outside world" anyway and what awaits it.

The final train of the day, consisting of empty passenger stock and heritage waggons, is shunted into position ready for stabling.

After reports from Jill Oxford that there was a noise suggesting the straining of the point rodding within Maespoeth Yard Dave Price investigated and here Alex Hume explains the difficulty in moving the point lever to Dave Price.
190089
At "the lever end" Dave Price removes paint and some material from the rodding movement.
190090
Also at the base of the lever a file was taken to the frame to ease the action of the locking rod.
190091
Within the yard, all of the stools were checked to see if any friction was apparent. Just the one nearest the platform at Maespoeth, the one that Jill could hear making a noise earlier was causing the problem.
190095
In the afternoon, Alex Hume was given a demonstration on how to use a traversing jack to re-rail a waggon.

190096
This was the penultimate weekend of Passenger Operations and although the numbers were low it did allow us to run practice runs for a trainee driver and guard.

190093
Our most recent addition as trainee No. 6 driver is Shelley Ryder who is set to become our third lady driver for No. 6.

An emergency repair to the boards immediately outside the S & T door was needed this weekend. Dave Price took the opportunity of putting preservative on some of the wood while he was able to access it...
9280003
.. and then replaced one of the boards.
9280005
After a misty start to the day Maespoeth & Corris were bathed in glorious sunshine for much of the day and passenger numbers were good.
9280010
After lunch Dave Price, assisted by Jill Oxford, turned his attention to repairing the shed that had been used during the June Gala. This was slightly damaged on it's return to Maespoeth.

Scheduled passenger services on the Corris Railway now only run on Sundays on designated weekends through to the end of October except for the weekend of the Annual General Meeting when there will be services on both Saturday and Sunday.

The evening of Saturday 20th September 2003 saw a special train trip given by the Talyllyn Railway to members of the TR and the Corris Railway who had been involved in the June Steam Gala when ex-Corris Railway locomotive No. 3 made a visit to the Corris Railway along with ex-corris stock - Carriage 17, Brake Van 6 and the Queen Mary coal waggon..

9200003
Corris and Talyllyn members start to arrive to await the 6:10pm special from Abergynolwyn to Tywyn Wharf and return.
9200004
At Tywyn Wharf a splendid buffet had already been prepared and was thoroughly enjoyed by all present.

Liz Green waits for the signal to proceed with shunting operations at Abergynolwyn.
9210024
On Sunday Adrian Britchford continued his work on fabricating buffer beams.
9210025
This is not an apparition - Steve Wheeler starts and revs up the No. 8 power unit and the first firing produced just a little black smoke - Steve Wheeler is mostly hidden by the smoke.
9210026
Steve checks oil pressures etc. on the power unit of No. 8.
9210027
Outside Peter Guest turns his attention to extending the fence at the edge of the platform area.
9210028
You can see here (looking South) how much progress has been made in extending our trackbed profile alongside what is currently the North Loop Siding.
9210033
And this is looking North towards the engine shed.
9210038
Due to the fact that we have more levers in use in the signal box it was found that the blockmans desk gave very little room to maneuvre so has been moved to the corner.
9210039
The board for holding the staffs safely has been relocated to the valley side of the signal box.
9210045
And you can see here that the passenger train was in Maespoeth Platform as the three staffs in use were in the hands of the Blockman.
9210047
Peter Guest fuels the ever present bonfire to get rid of burnable rubbish.

Our good friend Jonathan Clay shows off his skills.
8240043
Local lad Jonathan Hall made his third appearance as an exhibitor.
8240050

8240061
Not all displays were of railways - This stand was overrun with exact replicas of lawnmowers of all sizes down to miniature.
8240070
Our friend Tom provided our steam ride on train service.
8240075
Not to forget that we also ran passenger services for the whole three days.

Chris Britchford & Tracey Cooper manage to catch up on matters while waiting for a burger.
8240116
A night service was run for the attendees of the Bar-B-Que.
8250122
On Monday Steve Harris from Warwick, made a start on constructing a slate fence at Maespoeth at our Eastern boundary just below the North Loop Siding.
8250124
A young man named Alistair Crane from Peterborough provided invaluable assistance as Assistant Guard to Richard Greenhough.
8250128
Ken & Josh Gray carried on their work on the point rodding to bring more turnouts under the direct control of the signal box.
 8250129
And Bryn Morgan and Joe Kennion carry on the preparation for the bench to carry the point rodding cranks.
8250133
In the engine shed Dave Price upgrades the coupling arrangement while Adrian Britchford re-primers the heritage waggon.
8250136
Also of note, in the signal box we now have a splendid board for safely holding the tokens when not physically in use. (I wonder how long it will stay there!).

Photographs from the weekend of 28th & 29th June 2003.

Operations :
Driver Keith Foster and Fireman Martin Fuller look after Number 3 with water and coal going onboard. 28/06/03. And what it was all about this weekend as locomotive Number 3 rounds Pioneer Curve on the entrance to Corris Station with it's 125th Birthday headboard proudly displayed on the front. 28/06/03.
Richard Shipman was on duty at Corris as Blockman, ably assisted by Alex Hume who was on duty on the platform when this photograph was taken. 28/06/03. Another disabled passenger makes full and proper use of our carriage for the disabled and the wheelchair ramp at Maespoeth. 28/06/03.
David Coleman gives one of his (many) shed talks for the visiting passengers. 28/06/03. Caption ? "I'm sure I left that steam locomotive somewhere !" Fireman Martin Fuller, visitor Peter Kazer, driver Keith Foster and another gentleman (apologies I did not get his name) waiting for the next service train time for Number 3. 28/06/03.
Passengers boarding yet another full train of the weekend. 28/06/03. Keith Foster brings the steam service train steadily into Maespoeth  28/06/03.
With the two train opertion timetable it meant that the shed talks were almost continuous at times. Here is just one group listening intently to the information about the railway and the area. 29/06/03. During last week Richard Shipman took time out to clean and buff up the handles on the lever frame. The four in the foreground show what they should look like. The others will be done soon too. 29/06/03.
Sunday 29th saw another brilliant day of sunshine, many visitors and as can be seen here, Adrian Britchford and David Price propel a waggon towards the shed to await an opportunity to get it inside for Adrian to complete some welding work. 29/06/03. While "off duty" driver Mike Davies takes an opportunity for a bacon and egg lunch cooked (of course) in the fire of Number 3. 29/06/03.
And the sad part of the weekend - the very last steam train on it's way back from Corris for the last time, seen here hauling the Heritage Stock back to Maespoeth . 29/06/03. The ever present Dave Price organises the shunt in Maespoeth Yard. 29/06/03.
And a very dapper David Coleman takes on the duty of guard in Corris Brake Van 204 for shunting within the yard area. 29/06/03.
Events :
Not often that you see Dave Price with his hands in his pockets ! Seen here being interviewed for video. 28/06/03. Yours truly and wife Jill asked to pose at Maespoeth during the Victorian Weekend celebrations to celebrate the 125th birthday of locomotive Number 3. 28/06/03.
Trefor Davis also (somehow) managed to get some time off from operational duties to show off his superbly rebuilt and refurbished road roller. 28/06/03. Society Vice Chairman Keith Davis and Society Treasurer Brenda Davis look the part alongside the vintage car at Corris Station. 28/06/03.
Councillor Gretta Jones and Mrs. Lloyd also took their part in the celebrations. 28/06/03. A group photograph at the museum also included Sara Eade (Tal-y-Llyn postmaster) and Steve Parr, Corris Railway events organiser. 28/06/03.
Joan Samson takes a break from being guard on the Corris with Steve Parr and Sara Eade. 28/06/03. Abigail Rigby won the childrens prize for Victorian dress. 28/06/03.
Fireman Martin Fuller has the duty of cutting the birthday cake on Corris Platform. 28/06/03. Another "steam attraction" in the car park at Corris was this steam boat which attracted a lot of interest.  28/06/03.
A line up of tractors was also on display. 28/06/03. I wouldn't embarrass them by adding up their ages but believe me it is significant. Nell Rohleder, Fred Rohleder and Bryn Morgan were determined to join in all of the fun too. 28/06/03.
To show that it was not all hard work this particular weekend, with grateful thanks to Meinir Coleman many of the operational and event staff enjoyed an (almost) end of event evening at the Dulas Valley Hotel. Here David Coleman shares a joke or two with Meinir (just hidden) Jan and Councillor Gretta Jones.  28/06/03. Meinir Coleman was presented with a bouquet of flowers as not only an appreciation for the evening but also her hard work in the museum over many weeks so far this season. 28/06/03.
Member Keith Rogers keeps a close eye on the seconds that David Coleman is having.  28/06/03. Brenda Davis provided much needed refreshments outside the museum at Corris  29/06/03.
Making a repeat visit to Corris - the fairground organ provided some of the atmosphere for us. 29/06/03.

Photographs from the weekend of 21st, 22nd & 23rd June 2003.

The wall at Maespoeth car park edge - All hands to the pump to spread the concrete exactly where it is needed. 15/03/03. Readymix in place and good weather for it to go off in good time. 15/03/03.
Concrete was also put behind the S & T building to reinforce the gap between the Upper Corris Tramway and the rear S & T wall. 15/03/03. First thing Sunday morning, work commences. 16/03/03.
On Saturday the accommodation crossing at Brynllwyd was used as an "overflow car park" due to the imminent arrival of a load of readymix concrete. 16/03/03. While everything else was going on local contractor Richard Evans makes a grand start on the preparation of the ground for the new trackbed alignment. 16/03/03.
.. and the big mound that had been deposited at Brynllwyd has now been moved too. 16/03/03. You can see from this photograph the new track alignment (photograph taken from just beyond the signal box looking north). 16/03/03.
Another view of the preparatory work for the arrival of the new turnout and beyond. 16/03/03. Alongside the main A487 just north of Pont Evans the local council are tidying the roadside edge and re-walling where necessary. 16/03/03.

The first preparation for the walling of Maespoeth car park was to concrete the hollows with "Metposts" inset at the correct places for the future fitting of fencing posts. (Stan Stockton in photograph). 01/03/03.

Then on Sunday the main shuttering was put firmly into place. Keith Davis, Frank Walker and Roger Holder seen here. 02/03/03
The fencing has been moved out of the way in readiness for the arrival of the new turnout. 01/03/03  Just how do you remove fence posts once they have been concreted into the ground ? Bryn Morgan, Richard Greenhough and Trefor Davies show us all how to do it with a sleeper, a jack, a chain and a crowbar - and a lot of effort.02/03/03
Also on Saturday a team of members started moving the newly arrived workshop equipment into place. 01/03/03 Here you can see work being done in preparing the immediate area for the arrival of the new turnout. 01/03/03

Just a bit more ... Just a bit more ...
The planned working party for this weekend was re-arranging the layout in the Museum. 15/02/03.

The carriage is now on the other side of the coach house. 15/02/03.
With the waggons now stored on the window side therefore allowing more light to enter the coach house. 15/02/03. As you can see here the point rodding is really coming on. 15/02/03.
While the fencing too needed some re-arranging to allow the new turnout to be installed soon. 16/02/03. The work in the Parcels Office in providing a new floor will provide much needed space for us.16/02/03
