5623
It’s Christmas time, Y Mochyn gets dressed up for the occasion…

5624
…as does Santa’s helpers! (Ellie, Chris,Charlie and Rabir).

5625
The first train heads northwards on a dull, damp morning…

5627
…and upon return, the operating staff and helpers warm up with a cuppa! (Patrick, Amanda, Derek, Jack)

5628
Before long, the sun is out – as are the passengers after having seen Santa…

5630
…who has a polar bear to keep him warm!

5631
When the second train arrives, Andrew cooks bacon to order for University colleagues…

5637
…before heading back to Corris in a cloud of steam.

5644
At times, weather conditions were very good, resulting in good loadings…

5645
…who queued to see Santa…

5646
…while Jack, Andrew and Bob enjoy a mince pie!

5647
In the engine shed, Trefor and Mike observe…

5648
…Steve and Ifor discussing the way forward with No. 8.

5650
Andrew has young visitors entranced as he explains the most important part of a steam locomotive (answer – the shelf for his cuppa!)…

5652
…until Billy (in hi-viz jacket) rounds up the passengers…

5655
…for the train to head off to Corris again.

5677
In the evening, a Christmas dinner was enjoyed in the Penybont Hotel, Talyllyn…

5678

5679

5680

5681
…which led to duelling cameras!

5683
Sunday, 11.12.11. Some of the train crew and helpers for today (Dylan, Patrick, Daniel, Derek)…

5686
…with Bill, Sally and Dick…

5687
…and of course, the driver – Richard.

5690
The train is seen off by Santa’s helpers.

5695
The rare sight of three diesels lined up outside (5, 6 & 8).

5696
Richard has been hard at it, trimming the roadside hedge…

5699
…while Derek swots up on his Rule Book.

5700
Tom Gupta compresses aluminium foil for a casting which…

5701
…Richard trims…

5702
…and Steve turns…

5703
…to form a tablet for a single line tablet machine.

5707
Santa pops out of his grotto to take photos of the activity…

5708
…while his helper gets the sack!

5709
Other helpers relax between trains…

5713
…until the last train of the weekend whistles on its approach.

5731
Before long, the last train heads back to Corris with the last load of happy passengers…

5739
…before cresting the gradient at Braichgoch Farm Accommodation crossing.

5756
The Benedetto’s have been superbly “manning” the Museum all weekend…

5759
…until the last train is seen off in the gathering gloom.

Saturday, 3.12.11. The motion of No. 7 is being put back together…

5578
…by Trefor, here re-assembling the brakes.

5580
The new white metal bearing on the big end of the connecting rod, with slot for lubrication felt.

5582
In the Carriage Shed, Sara and Jack have been decorating for Santa.

5583
Trefor checks the emissions from No. 7’s chimney as it is steamed to check the re-assembled motion…

5584
…before Mike eases No. 7 up to take on water…

5585
…and heading off to Corris, driving stray sheep before it.

5586
By the time it returns, it is dark and Jack keeps an eye out as the loco…

5588
…is put away in the Engine Shed.

5589
Outside, the Lydd bogie now has both (very smart) ends completed…

5590
…and the crane has been moved outside to release the waggon for storing and displaying completed items for No. 10.

5598
Sunday, 4.12.11. Trefor and Mike chat over a ‘paned before showing off…

5600
…a spacer ring made up by Mike earlier in the day to correct a misalignment in No. 7’s motion…

5601
…which fits on the driving wheel crank pin…

5603
…all of which is reassembled by Trefor with the aid of a Birmingham spanner, overlooked by a man with fine physique!

5604
Nearby, there are some hot metal welding test pieces for???

Saturday, 26.11.11. Dick primes those bits of the frames of carriage No. 22 that have not been written on!

5549
The roof of the gazebo is assembled for Sion Corn – well, sort of!

5552
Richard Shipman gets stuck into decorating the carriages for him…

5553
…while Richard Greenhough, Jack Evans and Tony Pritchett walk back to Maespoeth Yard from Pont y Goedwig after pummelling the brambles into submission…

5556
…and instead offer their opinion on how the gazebo frame fits together!

5557
The outside of the Carriage Shed with the lights working inside – working conditions now are much improved!

5558
Sunday, 27.11.11. Trefor and Ifor watch Richard removing the cover of the welder as part of an investigation into why it doesn’t work any more…

5559
…after fitting a contactless treadle in the track as part of train detection equipment for signalling purposes.

5560
Sara has paid a visit, so the gazebo is finally assembled…

5561
…so Jack and Richard have a rest after their exertions.

5563
Tony and Richard (Greenhough) trim the hedge around Brynllwyd South accommodation crossing prior to its improvement for site access purposes to the tipping area north of Pont y Goedwig.

5564

Saturday, 12.11.11. No. 7 is missing some items of motion…

5512
…but components and patterns for No. 10 have arrived for storage.

5513
Handy extra power points have been put in the Carriage Shed…

5515
…and waggon 202 is receiving a new paint job!

5517
Richard is clearing the floor in the Carriage Shed to make room for Santa’s grotto…

5522
…while Andy has a very capable apprentice working on No. 22 – Jack Evans (son of Richard [Rugog])…

5523
…who has also helped out checking and stacking sleepers.

5532
In the evening, pre-prepared goodies from and for Santa have arrived.

5534
Sunday, 13.11.11. Fresh from his Graduation Ceremony yesterday, Dave Ingram chats with Trefor and Richard concerning regulatory matters…

5536
…while another Richard checks wheelsets for waggon No. 202.

5537
Andy continues with carriage No. 22…

5539
…but his apprentice has been lost to the loco crew!

5540
Richard is preparing signal lights for control purposes…

5542
…which results in discussion on curing an engineering problem as Mike joins in.

5543
Later in the day, Mike points out a problem with a coupling rod bearing, which has had Trefor scratching his head…

5544
…and it is obvious who has been training Jack!

5547
Andy has left, leaving the filler to dry – for next time!

Saturday, 5.11.11 The shuttering in the centre pit has been released, but…

5463
…it will need a few beefy fellows to lift them out of it!

5464
Mike’s former is all ready for concreting the pit floor.

5485
Roger’s seat and floor in the centre vestibule of the Museum carriage look good enough to use!

5486
There is a Narrow Gauge Staff get-together at Tywyn, special trains being run with Nos. 3 & 1 double heading one train…

5487
…while Nos. 7 & 4 double head another – two Tattoo’s on one train!

5488
The TR and CR crews have swopped engines…

5489
…and they are obviously enjoying themselves!

5490
Sunday, 6.11.11 No. 7 is delivered back to Maespoeth – in time for the Santa trains!

5491
No. 6 is ready to greet his stable-mate, as preparations are made to construct the unloading ramp.

5492
Many hands make light work!

5494
Soon all is ready, and waggon 218 is eased up the ramp to help take the strain.

5499
Soon, No. 7 is eased down the ramp…

5500
…until wheels touch Corris metals once again!

5504
No. 6 propels No. 7 back into the engine shed…

5507
…where, after a thorough examination, she is steamed to check everything over…

5508
…and taken for a spin
for a final check before putting her to bed after an exciting month!

Dick and Mike have got a hard day ahead of themselves barrowing waste…

02
… from the collapsed pit wall where Derek and Tony are digging.

03
It’s Diesel Day so No. 6 is on passenger service duty.

04
Up at Corris the football pitch is going to seed following the folding of the village football club at the end of the previous season.

05
The return trip enables those in the cab to have a superb view of our wonderful line.

06
Back in the shed Ade is working on the new carriage chassis.

07
Richard, David and Roger have a good crowd for their second trip down towards Pont y Goedwig…

08
…as the group walk past the buffers…

09
… and onto the site of the planned embankment where David gives full details of the work to be done.

10
Guard Patrick Jolley leans on the fence as Mike calls down to today’s Controller, Alan Witts.

11
The next day it is time for us to see no 7 at Tywyn. Here Trefor and Mike chat with Richard Shipman.

12
Sara made sure that everyone had tickets and the chance to donate their fare to the fund of their choice.

13
Cameras at the ready as No. 7 prepares to run past the assembled photographers at Rhydyronen.

14
No 7 as never seen before – as it is about to go under a bridge.

15
Everyone was happy to see no 7 taking water at Dolgoch, a timeless narrow gauge location.

16
The crew swapped round to give everyone a go, here Chris has fired on the approach to Abergynolwyn.

17
Ade makes sure he has photos for the family album.

18
Roger gets plenty of advice as to how to mind the loco as others have their lunch.

19
Up at Nant Gwernol Andrew uncouples as Paul races to get his photos.

20
All too soon we are back at Wharf and Andrew loads the bunker with coal.

21
Sadly no mainline trains passed as No. 7 stood by the standard gauge tracks.

Thursday, 20.10.11. Somebody has done a superb job of making an end for waggon No. 218 – and the planks at the south end are being bolted down – at last!

5396
Saturday, 22.10.11. You can’t exactly miss the rendezvous point for participants in the Pont y Goedwig deviation works tour!

5397
Richard Saffery follows up at the rear of the first group. The small white pegs represent the proposed horizontal alignment of the rails.

5398
It was a lovely day for it!

5402
In the Engine Shed, the bottom of the east pit wall is being cleaned out prior to starting concrete work.

5404
The second group make their way along the base of the proposed deviation works.

5415
…duly photographed from all angles!

5419
The loco crew are all smiles!

5422
Some of the trip was videoed by Mike Floate…

5424
…while Chris had a turn at firing…

5426
…and yours truly a spot of driving.

5429
Back at Maespoeth, the second window in the S&T Shed has been replaced and only needs puttying finishing, and painting.

5430
The north end of Carriage No. 22 is really looking the part!

5431
Unusually, the diesel locomotives have been stabled in the Carriage Shed to leave the Engine Shed clear for concreting the middle pit wall…

5432
…now that materials have arrived!

5433
Bird boxes have been fixed to the north gable of the Carriage Shed…

Sunday, 18.9.11. The frames of No. 23 are back near the floor, so that….

5130
…further welding can take place.

5139
The train crew for the day are Patrick Jolley, Mike Green and…

5140
…tending No. 7’s fire, Derek…

5142
…who proudly shows the bracket fabricated to hang the fire irons when No. 7 visits Tywyn because there will be no corner to prop them in!

5143
The train waits patiently, showing off its new (temporary) running plate, again for the Tywyn visit.

5145
In the engine shed, lightweight folded metal infill panels for the pit await stiffening and placing in position.

5146
The 15.40 is ready to depart…

5147
…as soon as the passengers finish their tour.

5150
The train departs, with Derek taking a turn driving under instruction.

5154

5160
…closely followed by No. 6.

Just exercise your imagination – a 4 carriage train, headed by No. 7, storming the bottom of Maespoeth bank (at this point, 1 in 40)! The west rail will be roughly along the line of the base of the reptile fence in line and level.

Sunday, 28.8.11 Ah! So that was what the windmills were for – to rotate the frames of Carriage No. 23, here with assistance from Steve and Ifor, to improve access for welding the frames in awkward locations.

002
Panelling of Carriage No. 22 has commenced.

003
More electrical switchgear is being added in the engine shed.

004
In the pouring rain, No. 7 sets off after coaling, to couple up to the carriages for a MRTE evening Special.

005
Monday, 29.8.11 Dave Ingram drives and Trefor fires as an “extra” train runs up to Corris to help cope with intending passengers arising from the MRTE being held in the village.

It’s all white now as the edge of earthworks pegs emerge free from the cut bracken.

Sheeting is ready for putting out to attract reptiles (please don’t tread on them)…

011
…and neither tread on the carpet, please – your boots are probably dirty – and you might squash the reptiles underneath!

012
It looks like we are on shaky ground – a pool created by our fencing contractor – but fortunately, this is outside the proposed earthworks…

29 July 2011: Southern Extension News
Work commenced on pegging out the proposed earthworks for our extension beyond Maespoeth. Marker posts were placed at 20m intervals along the toe of the proposed embankment. The schematic above illustrates.

0002
The way ahead, beyond the buffer stops... with kind permission from the landowner, a small path is cleared to allow access to the site.

0003
Looking back up the path, the steam from No 7 can be seen rising at Maespoeth.

0004a
Alex Gibson drives in the first peg but it will soon be lost in the dense undergrowth, so...

0004
... it is replaced with something larger.

0005
A path is cleared between adjacent posts, to create a line of sight along the bottom of the proposed embankment. Here seen looking towards Maespoeth.
0006
As Brynllwyd South is planned to be the main access for earthworks plant, a small path is cleared here, too. The marker post can be seen from the road.

0007
Towards Pont y Goedwig the height of the embankment rises considerably to a height of around 30 feet. The red line on the attached picture gives some idea of the huge amount of fill required to create the new trackbed. The red arrow points to the top of the existing embankment.

0008
Meanwhile, in other developments, Andrew Pugh was erecting more fencing for Maespoeth North platform...

0009
...while his wife, Flo, helps paint the signalbox with the help of a couple of Jolleys...

0010
...and another Jolley, the place was full of them! Meanwhile, drum roll..........

0011
