Corris Railway Book Launch |
On Saturday August 4th, Machynlleth-born author Gwyn Briwnant-Jones launched his new book "Last Days of the Old Corris" at the Corris Railway Museum. Gwyn's grandfather was an engine driver on the Corris Railway in the early years of the twentieth century, and his father and uncle also worked on the railways at Machynlleth. Gwyn himself grew up around the "tren bach", and one of the fascinating photos in the book is one he took of what was - unbeknownst at the time - the last train on the old railway. The book gains greatly from this personal and family knowledge.
The new book provides a sequel to Gwyn's acclaimed earlier work "Great Western Corris" and is principally a photographic record of the Corris Railway before and after closure in 1948. It also heralds the forthcoming re-opening of the first part of the line to passengers with a section on the work of the Corris Railway Society and two photographs showing the reconstructed railway.
Gwyn - who became a Vice-President of the Corris Railway Society in 2000 - met the Society's working party at Maespoeth (photo 1) before coming to the Corris Railway Museum to sign copies of the new book - making use of the desk once used by the Manager at Braichgoch Quarry (photos 2 & 3).
