Another Successful Corris Railway Society Annual Model Railway Exhibition in 2019

MRE 2019

The Corris Railway Society once again held its Annual Model Railway Exhibition at Y Plas in Machynlleth over the August Bank Holiday weekend and despite the hot weather making the beaches of the Mid Wales coast an attractive alternative welcomed 420 visitors over the two days with 78 of the visitors being children. Exhibition organiser Bill Newton always tries to find at least one layout where younger visitors can “try their hand” and perhaps think that they would like to try railway modelling as a hobby. Bill commented:

“We had a record number of visitors in 2018 when the Bank Holiday was sadly a washout for coastal attractions and I did fear the worst when I saw the forecast for a hot and dry couple of days. But once again when all of the invoices are paid there will be a nice sum of money making a very useful contribution towards continuing the history of the Corris Railway and keeping trains running in the Dulas Valley. Thanks go to all the exhibitors and also to those who publicised the event, helped with setting up and breaking it all down, the volunteer caterers, the door staffers, the sellers of goods and raffle tickets and the rest of the exhibition team. Not to mention another team from our all volunteer workforce who were operating trains and staffing the Museum and shop at Corris itself.”

The Corris will be running its trains on Sundays in September and October, plus Saturdays October 19th and 26th.

Narrow Gauge And Nostalgia To Feature At The 2019 Corris Railway Society Model Railway Exhibition

Model Railway Layout

The Corris Railway Society’s Model Railway Exhibition will take place at Y Plas in Machynlleth on the Saturday and Sunday of August Bank Holiday Weekend, August 24th and 25th with the doors open from 10.00 to 4.30 pm each day. Visitors will find a mixture of model layouts, some inspiring nostalgia for older generations, sales stands and a craft stall.

As might be expected narrow gauge models feature quite prominently in the line-up ranging from the large scale 16mm (with live steam and battery power) and a Gn15 scale representation of an estate railway serving a dubious cash crop, through to the ever popular 009. One of the rather less common narrow gauge scales, OOn3, is used to depict Crosby station (closed in 1968) on the Isle of Man Railway and Roarkes Landing represents American practice in Hon30.

O, OO and N gauge layouts will also feature. A couple of these layouts demonstrate the opportunities in minimum space in modern housing, being designed to fit on an ironing board and a window cill respectively, and those of a certain age will have memories of catalogues and toy shop windows evoked by Tri-ang TT and Trix Twin layouts. A chance to see those things that youngsters in years past wanted to have but couldn’t get the pocket money to stretch to. On a similar theme there will be a display of tinplate toys.

Trade wise the show will welcome back Nick and Dee Lowe selling railway ephemera and Martin Parry’s huge selection of models both new and second-hand with the majority being OO scale. Kate Packham also returns with her wide selection of jewellery and decorative items made from recycled glass (the organiser’s lady wife usually makes a bee-line for this) and the Corris will have a sales stand and a tombola, plus a fund raiser for the Falcon locomotive selling a range of donated items.

Refreshments and light snacks are sold and there is free parking close by. Admission costs £4.00 for adults, £3.50 for seniors £2 for children and £10 for a family (2 adults and 2 children). Plus trains will be running on the revived section of the Corris Railway, some four miles north of Machynlleth on August 24th, 25th, 26th and 27th.

More Days Of Operation, Wizards And Dragons And The Annual Model Railway Exhibition Make For A Busy Corris Railway August

MRE 2019

August is the main month for train operations on the Corris Railway with trains running on Saturdays, Sundays, Mondays and Tuesdays between Corris station and Maespoeth Junction. It is intended that the trains should be headed by steam locomotive No. 7, although if a problem arises a diesel may have to substitute. Trains leave Corris station at hourly intervals between 11.00 and 16.00. The Museum and sales area at Corris will be open and other refreshments can be purchased in the village café, less than 100 yards from the station.

For the younger family members, especially those who like tales of magical events August 3rd and 4th are days to note as any child dressed as a wizard or a dragon will travel for free on the trains and there will be children’s activities once the train reaches Maespoeth Junction. Some home-made refreshments might also prove tempting.

August Bank Holiday Weekend sees trains operating but in addition there is the Model Railway Exhibition taking place at Y Plas in Machynlleth. As in the past there will be layouts in various scales with some emphasis leaning towards narrow gauge and minimum space operations. For those of an age to remember the model trains they wanted but whose pocket money always fell short of the target there will be layouts featuring the now discontinued Tri-ang TT and Trix Twin ranges. Sales stands will sell model equipment, railwayana, books and DVDs and we should not forget Kate Packham’s stand selling jewellery and ornaments made of recycled and recovered glass. Refreshments are available and there is free parking close by. The doors are open between 10.00 and 16.30 on each day, giving a chance to ride the trains and also visit the exhibition.

Machynlleth offers a wide range of pubs, cafes and takeaways for anyone wishing to enjoy a lunch or afternoon tea.

Increased Visitor Numbers At Corris Railway Society’s Annual Model Railway Exhibition

MRE 2018

The Corris Railway Society held its Annual Model Railway Exhibition at Y Plas in Machynlleth over the August Bank Holiday weekend and was pleased to see a 33% increase in visitor numbers over the 2017 figure. The 520 members of the public who came to the exhibition meant that this was the largest attendance since 2014 (when it was a three day event). Encouragingly, in light of concerns that the age demographic of railway modellers is high and getting higher, 129 of the visitors were children. This may reflect the fact that the Corris event usually features one or two layouts aimed at appealing to younger visitors and sometimes give them an opportunity “to drive the trains”. Another established and popular feature is the stand selling hand crafted ornaments and jewellery made from recycled glass.

Organiser Bill Newton commented:- “It was great to see the increased number of visitors coming through the doors of Y Plas and having an enjoyable time at the exhibition. Once all of the invoices are paid the proceeds from the two days will make a good contribution towards the revival of the railway. Thanks go to all the exhibitors and also to those who publicised the event, helped with setting up and breaking it all down, the volunteer caterers, the door staffers the sellers of goods and raffle tickets and the rest of the exhibition team. We are a small society – more volunteers are always welcome – and trains were running between Corris station and Maespoeth Junction while the exhibition was on.”

The train services from Corris were also busy over the Bank Holiday period, making it a very satisfactory weekend for the Railway.

Corris Railway Society Model Railway Exhibition – August 25th & 26th 2018

Model Railway Layout

Appropriately enough the Corris Railway Society’s Model Railway Exhibition will feature narrow gauge layouts when it takes place at Y Plas in Machynlleth on August 25th and 26th. Representing the most popular narrow gauge 009 scale will be “World’s End” and “Hensbarrow Road”, whilst the light-hearted “Bumf Mine” is built to 7 mm standards. “Walmer Bridge” flies the flag for the 16 mm scale and demonstrates that smaller area layouts are possible in this “garden scale”.

0 gauge features on four layouts. “The Depot” and “Clough Street Sidings” portray the dieselised railway of today whilst nostalgia for days and toys gone by will be stirred by a visiting selection of Hornby clockwork and electric trains and a layout featuring the 1960’s Tri-ang “Big – Big Train” range.

More Tri-ang nostalgia from half a century ago will be represented by a TT gauge layout and there will be a trio of layouts in N, depicting a North German scene and two with a Welsh theme, “Taste of Amlwch” and “Dora Slate Incline”.

The most popular 4mm scale is represented by three very contrasting exhibits. “Westgate MPD” is based on the one time locoshed at Chester Northgate. An “Underground Ernie” layout features trains from the television series and children are invited to “drive” them. And there will a layout designed to fit into minimum space – in this case a window cill.

Sales stands include a return of the jewellery and decorative items from “Kate’s Glass”, railwayana, new and pre-owned model railway equipment, and of course fund raisers for the revival of the Corris Railway including the construction of the new “Falcon” steam locomotive and a Corris Railway Sales Stand.

Trains will be running from Corris station on the re-opened section of the Railway on Saturday 25th, Sunday 26th, Monday 27th and Tuesday 28th August.

Corris Railway pleased with 2017 Model Railway Exhibition results

Having reduced its Annual Model Railway Exhibition to a two day event from three previously the Corris Railway was pleased with the numbers attending at Y Plas in Machynlleth on August 26th and 27th, the Saturday and Sunday of the 2017 Summer Bank Holiday weekend.

One risk that the August date can present is the weather. If it is sunny and fine then local residents and visitors to the area tend to think of heading to the beach or enjoying a day at an outdoor attraction rather than an attending an indoor event. So organiser Bill Newton, and the rest of the Corris Railway Society members who organised and ran the event, were pleased to see increased numbers of visitors paying their admissions on both days. Which it may be recalled were both sunny and distinctly warm.Overall figures were down slightly compared with previous three day events but a four figure profit was made by the Exhibition which will go towards furthering the revival of the Corris Railway itself.

One pleasing feature was the number of children who attended, around 20% of the total. The Corris aims to make the Exhibition appeal to a wide range of ages and for younger children there was a chance to drive the trains on a Playmobil layout. There were some vintage exhibits for those who now remember their own childhood and a number of detailed layouts exhibiting the skills of their builders. Thanks go to all who exhibited and worked at the event and to those who came along for a visit.

Corris Railway Model Railway Exhibition August 26th & 27th 2017

There will be something for most members of the family when the Corris Railway Society hold their annual Model Railway Exhibition at Y Plas in Machynlleth on Saturday and Sunday August 26th and 27th. There will be a variety of layouts in a number of different scales and one of the larger ones will feature Playmobil equipment and offer children a chance to drive the trains. Parents and grandparents will have their memories stirred by exhibits featuring Mettoy tinplate trains from the 1950’s and the Tri-ang Big Big range from the 1960’s. More serious railway modelling, showing the skills and artistic abilities of the layout owners will be present and it is always worth trying to see all the small points of detail as well as watching the moving trains. A large scale model featuring working steam engines is bound to catch the eye.

The layouts will be supported by a number of sales stands including a return by Kate Packham’s range of jewellery and other items made from recovered and stained glass. This always seems to tempt customers seeking something a little different. The Corris Railway will have a stand selling its own range of goods and another stand will sell a range of books and models in aid of the building of the next steam locomotive to work on the revived line. Refreshments including light meals will be available and there is free car parking available nearby. Opening times are 10.30 to 17.00 on both days with admission costing £4.00 for adults, £3.50 for seniors, £2.00 for children and a family ticket ( 2 adults and 2 children) will cost £10.00.

In addition trains will be running on the Corris Railway itself giving a round trip along the Dulas Valley between Corris station and Maespoeth Junction.

Corris Railway Model Railway Exhibition August 26th & 27th

There will be something of an emphasis on larger scale and vintage models when the Corris Railway holds its annual Model Railway Exhibition on August 26th and 27th at The Plas in Machynlleth. Two of the O gauge exhibits “Matthews Yard” and “New Potosi Minerals” will be augmented by a layout featuring Chad Valley trains from the 1950’s when the Birmingham-based company set out to rival Hornby clockwork sets on the living room floor. Tri-ang’s Big-Big trains were a 1960’s attempt to revive commercial O gauge with battery powered models and a guest layout will feature these and the continuation of the range under the Novo brand name.

Also in action will be a 16 mm live steam layout and there will be a return of a Playmobil set-up which invites children to have a go at operating. Largest of all will be some 5 inch gauge models on static display. As the Corris Railway is reviving the Mid Wales narrow gauge line it is appropriate that there will be a narrow gauge presence in miniature with the “Colwyn Valley Light Railway” and “Barking Hatstand” holding the 009 flag alongside the O9 “Afon Adit”.

00 is represented by a Hornby layout featuring current and older models, there will be an HO layout and “Cobra Canyon” and “New Bridge Junction” are representing N gauge.

The layouts will be supported by a number of sales stands including a return by Kate Packham’s range of jewellery and other items made from recovered and stained glass.

The Corris Will Be At Narrow Gauge North On March 9th

NGNShow2023

The Corris Railway will have an information stand at the 2024 Narrow Gauge North exhibition on Saturday March 9th giving an opportunity for visitors to learn more about the revival of the oldest narrow gauge railway in Mid Wales. Corris Railway Society members will be pleased to talk about the completion of the new steam locomotive “Falcon” No. 10 which entered traffic last year and the work currently in progress on the embankment which is a vital part of extending the running line southward from Maespoeth Junction. Visitors can also hear about volunteering at the Corris.

Narrow Gauge North is a major showcase for narrow gauge railway modelling and there will be a variety of layouts across the scales from 009 to 16mm including some of the less common ones such as 5.5mm and 0n2. There will also be trade stands and modelling demonstrations including one by Peter Kazer whose past layouts have included a large scale one of the Corris.

The venue is Pudsey Civic Hall and the doors will be open from 10.30 to 4.30. Admission is £10 for adults and £1 for accompanied children under the age of 16. After 1.30pm a family admission will cost £15.00 which will cover 2 adults and accompanied children. There is disabled access to all areas of the exhibition area, except the stage in the hall.

The Corris Railway Society’s own model railway exhibition will take place on August 24th and 25th at Y Plas in Machynlleth.
